Follow the Chain
1. Project the image carousel (see Follow the Chain in the Teach section).
2. Ask students to consider all the steps and people involved in helping them to get better when they’re sick.
3. Give students 5-10 minutes to list all the steps they can think of on their road to recovery, from their visit to the doctor to the pharmacist who gives them the medicine they need and on to their restoration to good health.
4. Put students in small groups to compare lists and revise theirs to be the most complete possible.
5. Ask for a volunteer from each group to share their list with the class.
6. Discuss how AI might make each of these steps more efficient.

How do doctors and nurses work with patients to identify symptoms and determine what’s wrong?

How do we find the cause of the symptoms? What test might be run? What professionals are needed to administer them and analyze the results?

Once a condition is diagnosed, how is a treatment plan designed? Who is involved in creating and approving the treatment plan?

What procedures and/or medications does the treatment plan include? How are the medications made, and where do they come from? Who delivers them to the patient?

How do we monitor a patient’s progress? What happens if the treatment isn’t working?

How likely is it that the patient will get sick again? What do health professionals do to prevent this?
