Building Blocks : See what your city is made of

Asynchronous viewing:

Available from Monday, October 30 to Friday, November 3 2023

**LIVE EVENT REGISTRATION CLOSED, ASYNCHRONOUS REGISTRATION OPEN TILL FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27th**

From single homes to skyscrapers, buildings fill the streets of our towns and cities. But how are they built, what are they made of, and how are they created to serve our needs?

Join E2 Adventures on an exploration of the dynamic processes of construction and renewal that shape our cities and transform our neighbourhoods. Together, we will tour an active construction site to witness firsthand what goes into the creation of the buildings we frequent, and visit a manufacturer of the materials necessary to their construction to better understand the 'building blocks' that make them up!

TRIP ITINERARY

  • Site 1: Construction Site

Our first stop on this adventure is an active construction site, where the creation of an expansive building is currently underway! We’ll follow along with some of the workers showing us their current project and its various stages of development, while also featuring tools and innovations like 3D modelling and robotics that are used to give a unique perspective on how the building is built.

  • Site 2: Materials Manufacturer

The next level of this adventure is a construction materials manufacturer, which provides some of the materials that we'll see on the construction site we saw before. We’ll find out where and how they source their raw materials before it gets to the construction site, and discuss how innovation and sustainability connect to their process!

*please note that all sites are subject to change at any time.

EDUCATIONAL APPROACH

Who is this for?

  • Any math, science, social studies and languages class interested in how technology is used to create, plan and build all the large buildings around them.

  • Social studies and language classes exploring the Sustainable Development Goals: “Sustainable Cities and Communities” and “Innovation & Infrastructure”

  • Math classes looking for career-based application of geometry, 3D modelling, perspective views and scaling

  • Science classes investigating the form and function of support structures and robotics, and 3D projections with scaling

  • Construction or technology courses learning about construction materials, processes and components exploring multiple aspects of careers associated with construction

  • Computer technology courses developing software for a specific purpose such as planning and testing scale models for safety and appropriate material use

  • Career and SHSM programs could use this as a promotional tool for students considering Construction and Manufacturing

We always curate educational resource materials for every trip, to help educators of any subject area link their chosen field trip with their curriculum, and engage in all aspects of the Experiential Learning Cycle (Participate-Reflect-Apply).
