Netflix, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram... we're creating and consuming media every day. But how exactly do our online pictures and videos get to our friends, and vice versa?

Join E2 Adventures as we discover how the web actually works; as we meet with a media content creator who uses the internet for their art, learn how information is stored and communicated at a data centre, and disover how our data and messages to travel from one end of the world to another with a telecommunications company!

TRIP ITINERARY

  • Site 1: Media Creation

The first site we’ll be visiting on this virtual field trip is a media content creator! They’ll show us the ins and outs of how they use the Internet to help create, release and promote their content to fans all around the world!

  • Site 2: Data Centre

Next, it’s time to get up close and personal with the ways information is stored and processed by visiting a data centre! We’ll go behind the scenes and learn all about these ‘houses’ of computer systems and what they mean to helping the Internet run.

  • Site 3: Telecom Company

The final site on our exploration of the Internet is a tele-communications company that creates the hardware that allows our information and messages to travel from one end of the world to another! We’ll learn about fibre-optic cables, how light flashes through them, and what challenges they face to keep that data flowing!

*please note that all sites are subject to change at any time.

EDUCATIONAL APPROACH

Who is this for?

  • Any class — in languages, mathematics, science and technology or social studies — curious how the internet works, allows us to communicate and keeps us connected!

  • Social studies and language classes investigating Sustainable Development Goal “Resilient infrastructure and Access to the Internet”

  • Arts students interested in the creative process and leveraging technological tools when engaged in artistic creation, production, or performance.

  • Business Technology students exploring communication technologies and how they can be used to share and spread information over the internet

  • Communication Technology classes looking to see different types of equipment and technology and how they are used to perform a range of communications technology operations and tasks

  • Computer Technology classes investigating the real world building, use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of networks

  • Careers or SHSM programs could use this as a promotional tool for students considering their ICT or Arts and Culture programs

We always curate educational resource materials for every trip, to help educators of any subject area link their chosen field trip with their curriculum, and engage in all aspects of the Experiential Learning Cycle (Participate-Reflect-Apply).
